Grove City now 4-2 in conference
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 4-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 61-52 victory over host Geneva at Metheny Field House.
Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) made her first collegiate start and poured in a career-high 19 points. She also had a career-high 10 rebounds, completing her first double-double.
Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 18 points for Grove City (5-5 overall).
Grove City led 30-25 at halftime and broke open the game with a 14-3 run midway through the second half. Gibson and sophomore guard Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) both hit a pair of foul shots during the spurt while sophomore center Marie Carroll (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) finished off the run with back-to-back layups.
Grove City shot 47 percent (21 of 45) from the field while limiting Geneva (2-11, 0-6) to a 14-for-40 (35 percent) effort from the field. The Wolverines also owned a 35-20 rebound edge.
Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded a game-high five assists while Gibson and Nickoloff both had three assists each.
Heidi Mann led Geneva with 23 points.
Grove City will host conference rival Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the Grove City College Arena.
