W&J tops Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 54-40 setback against visiting Washington & Jefferson in the Grove City College Arena.
Washington & Jefferson led 25-16 at halftime and took command of the game by opening the second half with a 12-2 blitz.
Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led the Wolverines with 16 points. Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) added seven points and pulled in a career-high 15 rebounds.
For the game, Grove City shot 25 percent (14 of 57) from the field. Defensively, Grove City limited W&J (10-4, 5-2 PAC) to a 21-of-65 (32 percent) shooting effort.
Chelsea Apke led W&J with 18 points. The Presidents held a 48-45 rebound edge. Grove City had 12 turnovers and W&J turned over the ball eight times. Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded a team-high three assists for the Wolverines.
Grove City (5-6 overall) will host conference rival Thiel Saturday at 1 p.m.
