Grove City downs Thiel, 53-43
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by earning a 53-43 home win over conference rival Thiel in the Grove City College Arena.
Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) led Grove City with an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double and senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 16 points for the Wolverines. Gibson moved into ninth place on Grove City's all-time scoring list and now has 1,088 career points.
Grove City (6-6) led 22-17 at halftime and broke open the game in the second half by holding Thiel without a field goal for over five minutes during the middle portion of the period.
For the game, Grove City held Thiel to a 16-for-51 (31 percent) shooting performance from the field. The Wolverines also forced 20 turnovers. Grove City also outrebounded Thiel 49-37. Freshman forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) added seven rebounds.
Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) dished out a game-high seven assists. Grove City finished the game 18 of 64 (28 percent) from the field.
Kelly Barzak led Thiel (2-12, 1-7 PAC) with 13 points.
Grove City visits conference foe Westminster Wednesday at 6 p.m.
