Grove City falls in OT
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City players scored in double figures Wednesday night but the Wolverine women's basketball team dropped a 70-68 overtime decision to visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 19 points while sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) pumped in 15 points. Freshman forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) tossed in 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting while freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) added 10 points.
Waynesburg (9-9, 8-3 PAC) opened up a 69-66 lead in overtime but Shirey cut the lead to one by hitting two free throws with 51 seconds left. However, the Wolverines could not tie or take the lead in the final minutes as Grove City turned over the ball on each of its next two possessions.
Grove City trailed 39-30 early in the second half but used a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Shirey hit two threes to fuel the run while McDonald and sophomore guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) both added baskets in the paint.
Shirey's jumper with eight minutes left gave the Wolverines their largest lead, 52-48. Grove City took its final lead of the game, 62-60, when Gibson converted a three-point play with 3:08 left. Neither scored from the field for the remainder of regulation. Waynesburg's Elaine Hasek tied the game at 62 by converting two foul shots with 24 seconds left.
Grove City (6-9, 5-6 PAC) shot 26 of 69 (38 percent) from the field for the game while Waynesburg went 27 for 66 (41 percent). Waynesburg did hit eight of 15 three-point attempts
Rodriguez and McDonald both had eight rebounds, helping Grove City own a 46-41 edge on the glass. Rodriguez also blocked three shots. Gibson recorded five assists and Shirey had four assists. Junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) collected four steals.
Jessi Drayer led Waynesburg with 20 points.
Grove City will visit conference foe Bethany Saturday at 2 p.m.
