Bethany edges Grove City, 52-50
BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 5-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by falling at Bethany, 52-50, at Hummel Field House.
Grove City led 26-19 at halftime and opened up the lead to 30-19 early in the second half. Bethany rallied to take a 40-39 lead with 7:40 left.
Bethany held a 50-48 lead with less than a minute remaining but Grove City sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) tied the game with a layup. Bethany's Mikyla Tipton countered on the Bison's next possession by scoring in the paint with 23 seconds left.
Grove City could not convert on its next possession. Tipton missed the front end of a bonus free throw situation but Shirey's off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer missed the mark.
The Wolverines shot 8 for 33 (24 percent) from the field in the second half while Bethany shot 54 percent (15 of 28) over the final 20 minutes. For the game, Grove City went 18 for 63 (29 percent) and Bethany finished 23 of 54 (43 percent).
Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City (6-10 overall) with 16 points and Shirey finished with nine. Shirey also led Grove City with eight rebounds.
Tipton and Brianna Nuzum paced Bethany with 14 points each. Bethany outrebounded Grove City 45-37. Bethany had 22 turnovers and Grove City had a season-low 11 turnovers.
Grove City will host conference foe Chatham Wednesday at 6 p.m.
