Grove City rallies past Chatham
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 6-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by earning a 54-44 victory over visiting Chatham at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (7-10 overall) trailed 29-20 at halftime but closed the game on a 13-0 run over the final 7:39. The Wolverines trailed 44-41 with seven minutes left when sophomore guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) scored in the lane. Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) followed up with two free throws that put Grove City ahead to stay at the 6:17 mark.
After an exchange of possessions, McClean drilled a three-pointer from the left wing that pushed the lead to 48-44 with 4:39 left. Gibson and freshman Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) each recorded consecutive layups and senior guard Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) closed the scoring with a pair of free throws.
Gibson led Grove City with 22 points while Erbelding added nine. Grove City shot 21 of 55 (38 percent) from the field for the game while holding Chatham (3-17, 2-11 PAC) to an 18-for-59 (31 percent) effort. The Wolverines held Chatham to 21 percent (7 of 33) shooting in the second half.
Junior Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and freshman Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) each recorded nine rebounds to help Grove City earn a 45-34 edge on the glass. Gibson had four assists and Erbelding added three assists.
Grove City had just four turnovers in the second half and 14 for the game. Chatham turned over the ball just 10 times.
Carly Zelenak led Chatham with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Grove City will visit conference foe Saint Vincent Saturday at 4 p.m.
