Grove City falls on road

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 69-50 decision at Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center.

Grove City trailed 50-33 early in the second before charging back with a 13-2 blitz that slashed the lead to six. Sophomore guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) ignited the comeback with a jumper and freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) followed by going 4 for 4 at the foul line.

Senior guard Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead to 52-42. Layups by freshman forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and McDonald closed the run.

W&J (15-7, 10-5) countered by scoring 11 straight points, though, and reclaimed command of the game.

Junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamiolle) led Grove City (7-12, 6-9) with 13 points and McDonald added 11. Maust finished with nine points. Erbelding added eight points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Grove City shot 33 percent (19 of 57) for the game while W&J went 28 of 60 (47 percent). W&J owned a 40-34 edge in rebounds.

Alexa Burzese led the Presidents with 17 points while Valerie Dunlap had 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.

Grove City hosts conference foe Geneva Saturday at 1 p.m.
