Wolverines top Geneva on Hall of Fame Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference archrival Geneva Saturday afternoon by earning a 55-39 win over the visiting Golden Tornadoes on Hall of Fame Day at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (8-12, 7-9 PAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and extended the lead to 25-15 by halftime. Geneva (3-20, 1-15 PAC) trimmed Grove City's lead to 42-34 with 6:37 left but the Wolverines sealed the win by scoring seven consecutive points. Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) started the spurt with a three-point play while freshman forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) followed with two free throws.

Junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) added a jumper that gave Grove City a 49-34 lead with 4:23 left.

Gibson led Grove City's balanced offense with 12 points. Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) added nine points while Erbelding and sophomore guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) both chipped in eight points.

Gibson also recorded seven assists while Wells had a game-high 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Erbelding recorded three assists and five steals.

Grove City shot 33 percent (20 of 61) from the field and held Geneva to a 13-for-46 (28 percent) effort. Grove City also owned a 46-32 advantage in rebounds. The Wolverines also forced 21 Geneva turnovers.

Bri Cowden led Geneva with 15 points.

Prior to the game, Grove City honored Gibson and senior guard Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City will host conference rival Westminster in the 2012-13 home finale Wednesday at 6 p.m.
