Grove City downs Westminster, 62-53

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the home portion of the 2012-13 schedule Wednesday night with a 62-53 win over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (9-12, 8-9 PAC) jumped out to a 19-8 lead and never trailed. The Wolverines led 32-23 at halftime and led by as many as 13 points in the second half.

Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a game-high 20 points for Grove City and also recorded six assists. Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) pumped in 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Westminster (10-14, 8-9 PAC) closed to within 56-52 with 2:38 left. However, Grove City held the Titans without a field goal for the remainder of the game. Gibson and McDonald both hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

Grove City shot 20 of 57 (35 percent) from the floor for the game while Westminster went 20 of 54 (37 percent). The Wolverines owned a 45-33 edge in rebounds and also forced Westminster to commit 20 turnovers.

Freshman forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) recorded five steals for Grove City. It is the third straight game that Erbelding has tallied five steals.

Jenn Cantella led Westminster with 20 points.

Grove City will close the regular season Saturday at conference rival Thiel. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
