Wolverines drop conference finale

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team concluded the 2012-13 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 75-65 setback against Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thiel at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.

Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) paced Grove City with 20 points, including 16 in the second half. Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) poured in 18 points and freshman Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Thiel (8-17, 7-11) led 40-34 at halftime and extended its lead to 54-44 seven minutes into the second half. Gibson drilled a three-pointer with nine minutes left, pulling the Wolverines to within 58-57. However, Grove City could not take the lead.

Grove City shot 33 percent (27 of 82) from the field and owned a 50-40 edge in rebounds. Freshman forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) pulled down 12 rebounds for Grove City and McDonald added seven boards. Twenty-one of Grove City's 50 rebounds came at the offensive end.

Erbelding and junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) both had four assists. Grove City committed a season-low 11 turnovers.

Kelly Barzak led Thiel with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Kelly Muffley added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Thiel shot 42 percent (25 of 59) from the field for the game. Thiel had just 10 turnovers.

Grove City (9-13, 8-10 PAC) will be the sixth seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will visit No. 3 seed Washington & Jefferson Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
