W&J ousts Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 59-50 decision to third-seeded Washington & Jefferson (19-7) Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Henry Center.

Freshman Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) paced sixth-seeded Grove City (9-14) with a near triple-double. She fired in a career-high 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added a career-high eight steals.

Grove City fell behind 12-1 early but rallied to forge a 22-22 tie with three minutes left in the first half on a layup by freshman forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana). The Wolverines then took their first lead with 1:41 left when senior guard Leah Gibson(North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drilled two free throws.

However, W&J led 25-24 at halftime and scored the first seven points of the second half. Erbelding's layup with nine minutes left put Grove City back on top, 40-39, but W&J's Emily Abraham's hit a three-pointer on the next possession to put the Presidents ahead to stay.

Gibson added eight points and senior Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) tossed in seven points. Grove City shot 20 of 63 (32 percent) from the floor. Gibson and sophomore Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) each had three assists. Rodriguez snared 10 rebounds, helping Grove City own a 41-36 edge on the glass.

Valerie Dunlap led W&J with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Presidents shot 19 of 49 (39 percent) from the field. W&J had 19 turnovers and Grove City committed 22.

Grove City will graduate Gibson and Maust. Gibson concludes her career as the fifth-leading scorer in program history with 1,254 points.
