Wolverines drop opener

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season Friday night with a 75-58 setback against John Carroll in the semifinals of the Penn State Behrend Tournament at the Junker Centre.

John Carroll (1-0) jumped out to a 32-14 lead in the first half and held a 40-25 advantage at halftime. The Blue Streaks then led by as many as 27 in the second half.

Three Grove City players scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) with 14 points. Senior forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) poured in 13 points and sophomore forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) added a dozen points.

McDonald also pulled down eight rebounds, helping Grove City own a 43-36 edge on the glass. Freshman guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) distributed five assists.

Grove City shot 36 percent (19 of 53) from the field for the game while John Carroll went 30 for 70 (43 percent).

Melissa Spahar led John Carroll with 28 points and Kaitlyn Spahar added 20 points.

Grove City will face Alfred in the consolation game Saturday at 1 p.m. Alfred fell to Penn State Behrend Friday night, 59-47.
