Grove City tops Saxons
ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 1-1 overall Saturday afternoon by rolling to a 69-47 victory over Alfred in the consolation game of the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament at the Junker Centre.
Grove City bolted to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and extended the lead to 33-9 with 6:17 left in the first half. Grove City led 39-19 at halftime and led by as many as 25 in the second half.
Sophomore forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led Grove City with 12 points while senior forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) pumped in 11 points.
Junior guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) added nine points while senior Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and sophomore forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) each had eight points.
Sophomore forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds, helping Grove City own a 53-44 rebound edge. Erbelding had nine rebounds and McDonald had eight boards.
Junior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) distributed five assists.
Amanda Off led Alfred (0-2) with nine points.
Grove City will open its home schedule Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.
