Wolverines fall at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team couldn't overcome 30 turnovers as the Wolverines fell to Allegheny 87-62 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the David V. Wise Center.

Sophomore Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led the Wolverines (1-4) with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds while junior Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Saint Joseph) and sophomore Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) each added nine points.

In a game that featured 54 total fouls and 64 combined free throw attempts, the Gators (4-1) led from start to finish, jumping out to a 9-0 lead before Erbelding and McDonald hit consecutive shots to cut the Wolverine deficit to five.

Allegheny would extend its lead to 21-11, but Grove City answered with a 9-2 run, sparked by a pair of buckets from sophomore Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian), to cut the Gator lead to 23-20 with 7:44 remaining.

A pair of free throws by freshman Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) brought the Wolverines within four at 29-25 with 5:17 remaining, but Allegheny would close the half on a 9-1 run to lead 38-26 at the break.

The Gators opened the second half on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 19 points at 49-30 and would maintain from there. A pair of layups from senior Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) brought the Wolverines within 11 at 57-46 with 11 minutes remaining, but Grove City would draw no closer.

Rachel Vigliotti led the Gators with 18 points. Both Grove City and Allegheny shot 36 percent from the floor but the Gators held a 29-12 advantage in free throws made.

Grove City will look to rebound on Tuesday when it hosts Franciscan in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
