Cold shooting costs Wolverines at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team shot just 31 percent from the floor and failed to make a three-pointer as the Wolverines dropped a 56-46 decision at Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Senior Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) was the lone Grove City player to reach double-figures in scoring, posting 12 points and five rebounds on the day.

After the teams traded baskets to open the game, Bethany (2-3, 1-1 PAC) used a 10-1 run to jump out to an early 12-3 lead. The Wolverines would keep the deficit around 10 points for much of the half, cutting it back to 10 at 28-18 on a Coneby three-point play with 8:11 remaining in the half.

The Bison held the Wolverines scoreless over the next 5:42 of action but manage just six points of their own to lead 34-18 with 2:29 remaining in the period. A pair of Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) free throws and a jumper by junior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) cut the lead to 34-22, but Taylor Verrico would hit a free throw and Gabrielle Naples a layup to push the Bethany lead back to 15 before a layup by junior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) made it a 37-24 halftime score.

Bethany would extend their lead to 41-26 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Wolverines used an 8-2 run, highlighted by a pair of layups by Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana), to cut the deficit to single-digits at 43-34 with 10:05 remaining.

Grove City made a late push to close the gap, drawing within eight on two occasions on layups by senior Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) but could get no closer.

Naples led the Bison with 18 while Sami Schott and Mikyla Tipton added 12 and 11, respectively.

Grove City has more than three weeks before their next game as the Wolverines will travel to Pitt-Greensburg for a non-conference matchup on December 30 at 6 p.m.
