Wolverines hold off Chatham, 72-62

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team captured its first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of the season Wednesday night by earning a 72-62 win over visiting Chatham at the Grove City College Arena.

Junior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) fired in a game-high 22 points for the Wolverines while sophomore forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. Senior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) also poured in 11 points.

Grove City charged out to a 10-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and eventually led by as many as 21 at 31-10. Chatham pulled to within six, 43-37, early in the second half but the Wolverines again broke open the game with a 9-0 run midway through the period.

McDonald ignited the run with a putback while junior guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) followed by converting an offensive rebound into a layup. Shirey drained a three-pointer and Wells closed the spurt with a jumper.

Defensively, Grove City held Chatham (2-10, 1-4 PAC) to just one field goal over the final three minutes.

Senior forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) added 10 rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines own a 49-35 edge on the glass. Twenty-six of Grove City's rebounds came at the offensive end. Shirey had four assists and McDonald tallied three steals.

For the game, Grove City went 30 for 76 (40 percent) from the field while Chatham converted 22 of 52 (42 percent) shots. Grove City forced 24 turnovers and committed just 14 turnovers.

Rachel McClain led Chatham with 17 points. Anna Shashura posted 13 points.

Grove City (2-9, 1-4 PAC) will host archrival Geneva Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference play.
