Grove City knocks off Geneva for second-straight win
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a dominant 47-26 advantage on the boards to defeat Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Geneva 65-54 for its second-straight win on Saturday afternoon in the Grove City College Arena.
Junior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) led the Wolverines with 13 points and six rebounds while sophomore Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) recorded her second-straight double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) also added 12 points and four assists.
Grove City (3-9, 2-4 PAC) got off to a hot start, hitting six of its first nine shots en route to an early 13-6 lead. The Wolverines extended that lead to 19-10 on a pair of free throws by freshman Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) with 12:07 remaining in the period.
Geneva (1-11, 0-6) closed the gap to 23-18 on a Miranda Heaney three-pointer at the 9:46 mark, but Grove City responded with seven-straight points, capped by a Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) three-point play, to take their largest lead of the half at 30-18 with 7:31 to play.
The Golden Tornadoes would answer with an 9-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 30-27 at the 5:04 mark, but Shirey ended the run by draining a three to extend the lead back to six. Geneva would close within four on two more occasions, but senior Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) would nail a three with three seconds remaining to give the Wolverines a 38-31 halftime advantage.
After Grove City extended their lead to 11 in the opening minutes of the second half, Geneva took advantage of a Wolverine turnover to score five quick points and cut the lead to six at 44-38 with 14:33 remaining.
The Wolverines, however, responded with a 14-2 run spanning 10 minutes to put the game out of reach before holding on for the win.
Heidi Mann led the Golden Tornadoes with 15 points while Mary Keen and Nicole Hyland added 14 and 10, respectively.
Grove City will look to make it three in a row when they travel to Washington & Jefferson Wednesday for a 6 p.m. PAC matchup.
