Wolverines fall at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team hit six of its first nine shots but shot just 27 percent after that as the Wolverines fell to host Waynesburg 72-58 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.

Junior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) led Grove City (4-13, 3-8 PAC) with 18 points while sophomore Mary McDonald posted 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) also reached double figures with 11 points.

McDonald hit her first four shots to lead the Wolverines to an early 13-8 lead just five minutes in, and the Wolverines would maintain the lead at 16-13 midway through the first half, but Waynesburg (10-8, 8-3) responded with a 12-3 run to lead 25-19 with 5:51 to play.

After McDonald and the Jackets' Courtney Sargent traded layups, Erbelding would score four-straight points to cut the Waynesburg lead to two. Maura Bobby would hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to four before a Shirey free throw in the final minute made it a 29-26 halftime score.

McDonald led all scorers in the first half with 10 points on 5-5 shooting while Sargent led the Jackets with seven points and seven rebounds.

Shirey hit back-to-back jumpers to start the second half and give the Wolverines a 30-29 lead, but a Sargent three-point play would put Waynesburg back on top 32-30. Following a Rebecca Kerr layup, Shirey would drain a three to bring Grove City with a single point, but the Jackets would use a 15-2 run spanning seven minutes to break the game open.

The Wolverines would close within eight points twice in the final five minutes, but Waynesburg would hit 13-of-16 free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Sargent led Waynesburg with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Hayden Giuliani and Katie Gehlmann added 14 and 10, respectively.

The Wolverines held a 42-35 advantage on the boards but committed 23 turnovers compared to just 11 for the Jackets.

Grove City will return to action on Saturday, hosting PAC foe Bethany at 1:00 PM.
