Grove City earns 3rd straight win
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its third consecutive victory Wednesday night by earning a 72-58 victory at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham.
Junior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) paced Grove City with a game-high 25 points while sophomores Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) joined Shirey in double figures.
Erbelding poured in 16 points and McDonald collected 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Grove City led 24-19 at halftime and broke open the game with a 12-3 run over the final seven minutes of the game. Erbelding ignited the run with a layup while Shirey scored eight of Grove City's next 10 points to push the Wolverines' lead to 60-45.
Grove City then sealed the win by going 10 for 12 at the foul line in the final two minutes.
For the game, Grove City shot 27 for 61 (44 percent) from the field while Chatham went 20 for 43 (47 percent). Grove City forced 23 Chatham turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the ball 15 times.
Shirey, Erbelding and sophomore Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) all had six rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines claim a 38-25 edge on the glass. Shirey had four assists and three steals.
Emily Schmidt led Chatham (3-17, 2-11 PAC) with 16 points.
Grove City (7-13, 5-8 PAC) will host Saint Vincent Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference play.
