Grove City falls to W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team allowed Washington and Jefferson to shoot 52 percent in the second half as the Wolverines fell to the Presidents 75-54 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led the Wolverines (7-15, 5-10 PAC) with 14 points and seven rebounds while junior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) added nine points.

Both teams struggled to score in the early going, as it was the Presidents (15-7, 10-5) who held a narrow 5-2 lead just over five minutes into the game. Grove City responded with a 10-2 run to take a 12-7 lead at the 9:54 mark, but W&J answered right back with a 9-2 run of their own to retake the lead at 16-14 with 6:22 to play.

After the two teams traded baskets, senior Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) hit a three to give the Wolverines a 19-18 advantage, but Kara Seamon would hit consecutive threes to spark a 9-0 Presidents' run and W&J maintained a six-point, 30-24 lead at halftime.

The Presidents opened the second half on a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 43-26 with 15 minutes remaining. Grove City would close the deficit to 11 on an Erbelding layup at the 9:56 mark but W&J would allow them to get no closer, leading by as much as 26 in the late minutes.

Beka Bellhy led the Presidents with 22 points while Seamon and Valerie Dunlap added 16 and 13, respectively.

Grove City returns to action on Saturday, traveling to PAC-rival Geneva for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
