Grove City rolls to win in home finale

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team outscored visiting Thiel 32-5 over the final 17 minutes of the game Saturday afternoon as the host Wolverines earned a 63-36 win over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City held Thiel without a field goal for a 15-minute span in the second half after the Tomcats forged a 31-31 tie with 16:53 remaining.

Grove City led 37-33 with 13:38 left and the Wolverines then scored the next 26 points. Sophomore forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) scored seven of her game-high 19 points in that stretch while junior guard Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) helped ignite the run with a three-pointer.

Erbelding scored her 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field. Sophomore forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) and senior forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) both added 10 points. McDonald pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Erbelding and Coneby each had six rebounds.

Grove City (8-17, 6-12 PAC) shot 23 of 54 (43 percent) from the field for the game, including a 12-for-24 (50 percent) outing in the second half. Defensively, Grove City held Thiel to a 13-for-43 (30 percent) outing from the floor. Thiel made just four of its 20 second-half field goal attempts. Grove City also forced 22 turnovers.

Erbelding added four steals. The Wolverines matched a season low with just 11 turnovers.

Bethany Hines led Thiel (5-20, 4-14 PAC) with 12 points.

Prior to the game, Grove City honored Coneby and senior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City is the No. 7 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will visit No. 2 Saint Vincent Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
