Wolverines fall in tournament opener

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the 2013-14 season Tuesday night with a 64-39 setback at Saint Vincent in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Carey Center.

Saint Vincent jumped out to a 23-4 lead but Grove City rallied to cut the lead to 26-14 with 1:28 left. however, second-seeded Saint Vincent scored the final seven points of the first half and led 33-14 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led Grove City with 12 points and eight rebounds while sophomore forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) and junior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) each had six points.

Grove City shot 14 of 59 (24 percent) from the field for the game. The Wolverines also turned over the ball 26 times. Defensively, the Wolverines held Saint Vincent to 40 percent (23 of 57) shooting from the field.

Grove City also owned a 49-33 edge in rebounds. Senior forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) also pulled down eight rebounds. Twenty-three of Grove City's rebounds came at the offensive end.

Elle Collins led Saint Vincent (18-8) with 17 points. The Bearcats advance to Friday's semifinals and will play No. 3 Washington & Jefferson at top-seeded Thomas More.

Grove City (8-18) will lose Coneby and senior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) to graduation. Tuesday night marked the first postseason meeting between the teams.
