Grove City drops opener to Pitt-Greensburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 69-54 setback against Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday afternoon in the Grove City College Arena.

Junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led the Wolverines (0-1) with 19 points and eight rebounds while senior guard Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard Dale) added nine points to go with game-highs of 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.

Grove City jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an Erbelding free throw and the first two collegiate points from freshman Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) but the Bobcats (1-0) would respond with a pair of layups to take a 4-3 lead.

A McClean layup would make it a 5-4 Wolverine advantage and a layup by sophomore guard Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) would later tie the game at 9-9 with 15:35 remaining in the first half, but Pitt-Greensburg would outscore Grove City 22-10 over the remainder of the half to take a 31-19 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats' Kayla Dames led all scorers with 13 first-half points while McClean paced the Wolverines with six points and eight rebounds at the break.

Pitt-Greensburg's lead grew to 16 points at 35-19 early in the second half before an 8-0 Grove City run, led by six points from Erbelding, closed the gap to 35-27 and forced a Bobcat timeout. The Wolverines would remain close, trailing 39-31 after an Arkwright layup with 13:38 left in the game, but the Bobcats responded with a 13-4 run to extend their lead back to 17 points and then held on for the victory.

Dames led all scorers with 20 points and added seven rebounds for the Bobcats while Emily Nelson added 14 points and four assists.

Grove City shot 28 percent (20-72) from the field for the game while Pitt-Greensburg converted on 52 percent of their attempts (24-46), offsetting a plus-6 advantage for the Wolverines in both rebounds and turnovers.

The Wolverines return to action on Friday when they face Cincinnati-Clermont in the opening round of the Anderson (Ind.) University Tournament at 6 p.m.
