Carnegie Mellon holds off Wolverines

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball kept with Carnegie Mellon through the opening minutes of the second half, but the Tartans would pull away for a 74-58 victory over the Wolverines on Tuesday evening at Skibo Gymnasium.

Senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) led the Wolverines with 16 points while fellow senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard Dale) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) chipped in eight points to go with team-bests of five assists and three steals.

Playing at a fast pace early on, Grove City (1-3) jumped out to a 22-16 lead behind eight points from Shirey, including a pair of threes. Carnegie Mellon would answer with a 15-7 run over the next six minutes to retake the lead at 31-29 at the 6:09 mark. The Wolverines would respond once more, as sophomore Eloise Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Classical Academy) would complete a three-point play to put Grove City back on top 32-31 with 5:37 left in the half.

That would be the last lead the Wolverines would see, however, as the Tartans closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-34 lead into halftime. Lisa Murphy led Carnegie Mellon with 21 first-half points while Shirey had 11 for Grove City.

Grove City scored six straight points to open the second half, closing the gap to 43-40 behind a McClean layup at the 17:07 mark, but CMU answered with a 13-3 run to push the lead back to 13 and led by as much as 20 en route to the 16-point victory.

After shooting 47 percent and attempting 32 shots in the first half, the Wolverines took only 17 shots in the second half, making just five field goals (29.4%).

Murphy finished with game-highs of 29 points and nine rebounds to lead the Tartans while Lindsay Poss and Liza Otto added 12 and 10, respectively.

Grove City opens their Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule on December 3, hosting Washington & Jefferson at 5:30 p.m.
