Wolverines edge Waynesburg, 65-64

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team evened its Presidents' Athletic Conference record at 1-1 Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 65-64 win over host Waynesburg at Rudy Marisa Field House.

Sophomore guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) put the Wolverines ahead with 13 seconds left by drilling a jumper. The Grove City defense then blanked Waynesburg on the final possession of the game.

Junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) paced Grove City with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Stewart added 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) joined that duo in double figures with 11 points.

Grove City led by as many as 15 in the second half before Waynesburg went on a 21-5 run over the final seven minutes of the game. In the first half, Grove City bolted to a 16-4 lead but Waynesburg eventually trimmed the lead to 33-31 by halftime.

Grove City went 22 of 59 (37 percent) from the field while Waynesburg (2-5, 0-2) converted 20 of 56 (36 percent) field goal attempts. Waynesburg owned a 40-39 edge in rebounds.

Freshman Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) both grabbed seven rebounds. Erbelding also had six steals and four assists. Arkwright added four thefts. Grove City had 23 turnovers but forced 26 Waynesburg turnovers.

Haley Delaney led Waynesburg with 13 points.

Grove City will host Allegheny in non-conference play Monday at 5:30 p.m.
