Grove City nips Centre, 54-52
BEXLEY, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's basketball team advanced to the finals of Capital University's Marriott Columbus Airport Holiday Tournament by pulling out a 54-52 win over Centre in Monday night's semifinals at the Capital Centre. Grove City will now face host Capital in Tuesday's 5 p.m. title game.
Junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) drilled the game-winning jumper with five seconds left in regulation, breaking a 52-52 tie.
Centre led 31-22 at halftime and extended the lead to 37-26 early in the second half. Grove City (3-5) charged back with a 10-2 run, however, and eventually pulled into a 42-42 tie with eight minutes left on a layup by junior forward Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian).
The Wolverines took a 52-50 lead with 45 seconds left when sophomore guard Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) drilled a three-pointer. Centre tied the game moments later on a Paige Kellam basket. The final eight minutes featured five ties.
Erbelding led Grove City with 16 points while senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) added a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. McClean helped Grove City earn a 28-22 edge on the glass. Senior guard Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) posted a game-high four assists for the Wolverines.
Grove City shot 24 for 47 (51 percent) from the field for the game. The Wolverines drained 15 of 22 (68 percent) shots in the second half. Alexis Guy and Bonnie Rhule each had 14 points for Centre.
Capital defeated Wooster 70-49 in the other semifinal Monday night.
