Balanced attack leads Wolverines past Titans

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) scored a game-high 16 points and senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) and sophomore Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) also reached double-figures as the Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 56-38 victory over rival Westminster on Wednesday evening in the Grove City College Arena.

McClean scored 12 points and added game-highs of eight rebounds and three steals while Stewart also added 12 points. Senior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) dished a game-high six assists to go with three steals.

After a back-and-forth first five minutes, Grove City (5-7 overall) used a 13-3 run spanning seven minutes, led by six points from Erbelding, to lead the Titans (1-10, 0-4 PAC) 19-8 with 8:38 remaining in the period. Westminster would cut the lead down to five, but the Wolverines would close the half on a 10-0 run, capped by a Stewart three-pointer as time expired, to take a 31-16 lead into the locker room.

Erbelding and Stewart led Grove City with eight points apiece at the break while Allison Borts led the Titans with five.

Shirey would hit a three to open the half, but Westminster would hold Grove City to just four points over the next eight minutes to close the gap to 11 at 38-27 with 10:59 to play. That's as close as the Titans would come, however, as McClean hit a jumper to push the lead back to 13 and the Wolverines would lead by as much as 19 late in the period.

Borts finished with 11 points and six rebounds to lead Westminster.

Grove City shot 40 percent (23-57) from the field and 42 percent (5-12) from three while holding Westminster to 30 percent shooting (13-43). The Wolverines also recorded 15 steals and forced 25 total Titan turnovers while making just 15 miscues.

Grove City returns to action on Saturday when they visit conference foe Saint Vincent for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
