Erbelding, Shirey earn All-PAC; Erbelding Defensive POY
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Grove City junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year while senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) also earned All-PAC honors when the conference announced its postseason awards between PAC Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal games last night.
Erbelding, who also became the first Grove City player to be named to the All-PAC First team since Christine Slater earned the honor in 2011, led the PAC and ranks in the top 10 nationally with 95 total steals (3.39 per game). She also led the team and ranked sixth in the PAC in scoring (15.3), seventh in rebounding (7.7), 10th in field goal percentage (.467) and 10th in blocks (0.7).
Her 95 steals shattered the program's single-season record of 72 set by Karin Hendrickson in 1997, and she played a key role in helping the Wolverines force 20.7 turnovers per game, third-best in the PAC. She also became just the 10th player in program history to score more than 400 points in a single season (427).
Through three seasons, Erbelding has 784 career points, 437 rebounds and 186 steals.
Shirey earned Honorable Mention for the second-straight year after ranking second on the team in scoring (10.8) and leading the conference with 58 three-point field goals, the second-most in a single season in program history. She also ranked fifth in the PAC in minutes per game (30.8) and was just a few attempts shy of ranking second in the conference in free throw percentage (.810).
Shirey concludes her career 13th in Grove City history with 933 career points, tied for second with 131 three-pointers made, fourth in free throw percentage (.780), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.308) and ninth in assists (224).
Grove City (14-14) made its first appearance in the PAC tournament semifinals and won its most games since 2011.
