Waynesburg edges Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 69-64 home verdict to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Waynesburg in the Grove City College Arena Saturday afternoon. Waynesburg (10-9, 7-4 PAC) scored the final six points of the game over the final 35 seconds in earning the road victory.
Grove City (7-12, 5-7) took a 64-63 lead with 1:10 left when senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) drained a jumper. Waynesburg reclaimed the lead with 35 seconds left on Heather Davis' driving layup, though. Rebecca Kerr and Addy Knetzer then each hit a pair of foul shots in the final 12 seconds to seal the win.
Grove City trailed 41-31 at halftime and Waynesburg extended the lead to 49-34 early in the second half. Grove City charged back with a 21-5 run that featured three three-point goals from senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia). Shirey finished with a game-high 22 points and tied Grove City's single-game record with six total three-pointers.
McClean recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) added nine points, a game-high 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Davis led Waynesburg with 13 points while Knetzer finished with 12. Waynesburg held a 47-40 advantage in rebounds.
Grove City shot 37 percent (23 of 63) from the field in the game while Waynesburg went 25 of 60 (42 percent). Grove City went 12 for 26 at the foul line and Waynesburg converted 12 of 19 foul shots.
Grove City returns to action Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. conference game at longtime rival Westminster.
