Wolverines top Bethany, 70-64
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) poured in a career-high 28 points on 14-of-20 shooting Wednesday night to help lead the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 70-64 victory at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany in the Bison's Hummel Field House.
Senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Wolverines (11-13, 9-8 PAC). Grove City led 30-27 at halftime and took the lead for good with 10:44 remaining on a layup by senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).
Grove City sewed up the win by going 8 for 8 at the foul line in the final minute of the game. Freshman guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) hit the first two free throws and sophomore guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) then converted six consecutive foul shots in the closing moments.
McClean and Shirey also had five assists each for Grove City. McClean added four steals and Erbelding had three thefts. Arkwright blocked three shots.
For the game, Grove City shot 27 of 64 (42 percent) from the field while Bethany went 23 for 57 (40 percent). Grove City forced 25 Bethany turnovers and committed just 14 turnovers. Bethany outrebounded Grove City, 45-33.
Mikyla Tipton led Bethany (12-12, 8-9) with 21 points.
Grove City will visit Thiel in the regular season finale Saturday at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will clinch the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament with a victory Saturday.
