Grove City rolls past Thiel
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the 2014-15 regular season Saturday afternoon by earning a 66-34 road win at Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
Grove City charged out to a 17-0 lead and did not yield a point for the first 11 1/2 minutes of the game. The Wolverines led 28-9 at halftime and then put away the game with a 13-0 run early in the second half.
All 11 active Grove City players competed in the game and 10 recorded at least one field goal. Senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) paced Grove City's balanced attack with 10 points while freshman guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) posted nine points. Sophomore Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and junior Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) each added eight points.
Erbelding also had a team-high eight rebounds, helping Grove City (12-13, 10-8 PAC) own a 45-42 edge on the glass. McClean, Arkwright, junior Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) and senior Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) all recorded six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) dished out a career-high six assists and added five steals. Arkwright had three steals while Erbelding blocked three shots.
Grove City shot 23 for 65 (35 percent) from the field while Thiel went 11 for 46 (24 percent) on field goal attempts. Grove City forced 29 Thiel turnovers and committed just 11 turnovers.
Jaclyn Watkins led Thiel (5-20, 4-14 PAC) with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The win gives Grove City the No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will host eighth-seeded Thiel at 6 p.m. Monday night in the first round of the tournament. The winner will meet No. 4 Waynesburg in the quarterfinals Wednesday night.
