Grove City upsets Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- For the first time since 2011, the Grove City College women's basketball team will compete in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. Wednesday night, the fifth-seeded Wolverines earned a trip to the semifinal round by upsetting No. 4 Waynesburg, 65-57, at Rudy Marisa Field House in the quarterfinals.

Junior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) fired in a game-high 20 points for the Wolverines (14-13) while senior guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. Senior Cayley McClean (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale) added 13 points.

Erbelding and McClean each had nine rebounds, helping Grove City own a 41-35 edge on the glass.

Waynesburg (15-11) bolted out to a 12-2 lead but the Wolverines used a 9-0 run late in the half to surge ahead, 29-22. Shirey ignited the spurt with a three-pointer while Erbelding scored twice. Sophomore Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) added a jumper in that span.

Grove City led 31-27 at halftime but Waynesburg scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half and led 35-33. Shirey drilled a three-pointer with 16:41 left to put Grove City ahead to stay. The Wolverines then sewed up the win by going 9 for 12 at the foul line over the final three minutes. For the game, Grove City converted 17 of 20 foul shots.

Sophomore guard Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) recorded four assists and four steals for the Wolverines. Shirey had three assists and Erbelding tallied three steals. Grove City forced 23 turnovers and committed just 10 turnovers.

Lauren Blair, Heather Davis and Rebecca Kerr all scored 12 points for Waynesburg. Waynesburg shot 19 for 43 (44 percent) from the floor while Grove City went 23 for 69 (33 percent).

Grove City will visit top-seeded Thomas More (25-0) Friday night in the semifinals. The championship game will be Saturday afternoon at Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Ky.
