Grove City 84, Waynesburg 54
January 23, 1999--Five Lady Wolverines netted double-figures as Grove City raised its conference record to 2-0 with an 84-54 triumph over visiting Waynesburg. The 84 points marked the Lady Wolverines' best offensive showing this season.
Sophomore forwards Krista Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) and Lindsay Yeats (McLean, VA/Langley) each tossed in 16 points, while Jackie Becker (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), Karin Hendrickson (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) and Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) each added ten points.
The Lady Wolverines, who improved to 7-8 on the season, enjoyed a 68-34 advantage on the boards, led by Beckers ten caroms. Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) hauled in nine rebounds, while Yeats pulled down eight boards.
"Our offensive rebounding was a big factor," Grove City head coach Melissa Lamie said. "It helps when you have 26 offensive rebounds."
Grove City also handed out 20 assists as a squad. Hendrickson and Murphy distributed five apiece.
Grove City used a 20-2 blitz midway through the first half to break the game open. Yeats provided the spark by rattling off seven straight points, before Murphy added five of her own. Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) capped the run with a driving lay-in. The Grove City defense held Waynesburg without a field goal for nearly nine minutes during the spurt.
"Coach Lamie told us that we needed to play with complete intensity today," Murphy said. "That was our focus today, and I think we did a good job. I think that was the key."
The Lady Wolverines polished off their fourth home victory of the season with an 18-3 explosion. Point guard T.L. Thompson (Girard, PA/Girard) jump-started the run with a pair of assists and four points. Summers augmented the burst with six tallies.
"This is a good second win in the conference for us," Lamie said. "It was good to go out and take control right away and keep the spread (over Waynesburg)."
The Lady Wolverines return to action Wednesday night in Buffalo, NY against
