Grove City opens with road win
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season Tuesday night by rolling to a 78-59 victory over host Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference action at Chambers Hall.
Senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) paced Grove City with 24 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) fired in 14 points while freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added 11 points and six rebounds.
Grove City (1-0) forced 36 turnovers and limited the Bobcats to 15 of 45 (33 percent) shooting from the field for the game. Arkwright and senior forward Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) both recorded six steals while Erbelding had four steals.
Grove City took the lead for good late in the first quarter by assembling a 10-0 run after trailing 11-10. Freshman guard McKenzie Black (Akron, Ohio/Green) ignited the run with a jumper while Erbelding followed with consecutive baskets. Sophomore forward Jenn Ferguson (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Buchanan closed the spurt with back-to-back field goals.
The Wolverines led 23-16 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 40-25 by halftime. Grove City led 60-41 after 30 minutes. For the game, Grove City shot 30 of 62 (48 percent) from the floor. The Wolverines also outrebounded Pitt-Greensburg, 40-31.
Junior guard Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) recorded a game-high four assists.
Sylvia Stuart led Pitt-Greensburg with 20 points.
Grove City will compete in the Penn State Behrend Tournament this weekend. Friday night, the Wolverines face Fredonia State at 8 p.m. Saturday, the Wolverines will play either Behrend or Hiram.
