Wolverines hold off Behrend, 52-49

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 2-1 overall by pulling out a 52-49 win Saturday afternoon at Penn State Behrend in the consolation game of the Behrend Tip-Off Classic at the Junker Centre.

Junior guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) paced Grove City with a dozen points while senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) posted 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) also poured in 11 points.

Penn State Behrend led 22-19 at halftime and extended the lead to 33-24 midway through the third quarter. However, Grove City surged ahead for good by assembling a 16-0 run. Freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) ignited the run with a jumper while Arkwright followed with five straight points.

Grove City pulled ahead when freshman guard McKenzie Black (Akron, Ohio/Green) drained a three-pointer.

The Wolverines led 40-36 after three quarters and twice led by eight points in the final period.

Grove City shot 18 of 59 (31 percent) from the field while limiting Behrend to a 17-for-64 (27 percent) performance. Grove City also forced 21 turnovers. Behrend outrebounded Grove City, 48-41.

Erbelding added three blocked shots while senior forward Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) secured eight rebounds.

Rachel Razzano led Behrend with 11 points.

Grove City returns to action Monday night at Franciscan.
