Grove City falls on road

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 2-2 overall Monday night with a 71-62 non-conference setback at Franciscan University.

Grove City trailed 51-34 midway through the third quarter before charging back. The Wolverines whittled the lead to nine, 55-46, by the end of the quarter. Grove City then slashed the lead to 57-53 early in the fourth period on a putback by junior guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley).

However, Franciscan countered with a 7-0 run while holding Grove City scoreless for nearly seven minutes.

Sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) led the Wolverines with 23 points. She also had a team-high six rebounds and six steals. Freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added eight points.

Grove City owned a 31-26 edge in rebounds. The Wolverines went 22 of 54 (41 percent) from the floor while Franciscan shot 46 percent (24 of 52). The Barons went 7 for 11 (64 percent) from behind the three-point line and 16 for 16 at the foul line.

Iliana Gonzales led Franciscan with 33 points.

Grove City opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play December 2 at Washington & Jefferson.
