Cold second quarter costs Wolverines at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team kept with No. 1 Thomas More for a quarter but a scoreless second quarter would put the game out of reach as the Wolverines fell to the Saints 95-37 in Presidents' Athletic Conference road action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) led the Wolverines (2-6, 0-3 PAC) with 10 points and was one of four Wolverines with five rebounds while sophomores Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and Jenn Ferguson (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) each added five points and five rebounds.

The top-ranked Saints (6-0, 3-0) jumped out to an 18-9 lead just over seven minutes into the first quarter, but an Erbelding layup and four straight free throws from junior guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) closed the gap to 18-15 with a minute remaining. A Sydney Moss jumper would push the Thomas More Lead back to five but a jumper by freshman Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) would bring the Wolverines back within three at 20-17 at the end of the first quarter.

From there, however, the Saints would go on a 43-4 run overall, including 27-0 in the second quarter, to put the game out of reach.

Moss led the Saints with 19 points and six assists. She became Thomas More's all-time leading scorer in the victory and now has 1,708 career points.

The Wolverines shot just 26 percent from the floor and committed a season-high 34 turnovers in the loss.

Grove City returns to action with a non-conference road trip to Michigan after Christmas. The Wolverines will visit Alma on December 30 at 1 p.m. before traveling to Kalamazoo for a 2 p.m. start on the 31st.
