Grove City charges past archrival Geneva, 67-63
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team handed archrival Geneva its first Presidents' Athletic Conference loss of the season Saturday night as the visiting Wolverines rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Geneva, 67-63, at Metheny Field House.
Grove City trailed 50-40 late in the third quarter but pulled to within two, 52-50, early in the fourth after three consecutive baskets by senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia). The Wolverines tied the game at 57 midway through the final period when sophomore guard Katelyn Miller (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) drilled her third three-pointer of the game.
Grove City took the lead for good down the stretch when freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) scored the Wolverines' final nine points of the game. Her three-point play with 2:38 left cut Geneva's lead to 62-61.
Buchanan put Grove City on top by scoring layups on consecutive possessions. With the Wolverines leading 65-63, Buchanan blocked an inside shot by Geneva's Noelle Henry. Buchanan sealed the win by sinking two free throws with 2.7 seconds left.
Erbelding led Grove City with 15 points while sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) fired in 14 points. Buchanan finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Arkwright collected seven rebounds and four steals.
Junior guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) recorded four assists and classmate Teresa Dallatore (Mars, Pa./Mars) added three assists.
Grove City shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the field for the game while limiting Geneva (6-5, 3-1 PAC) to 16 of 42 (38 percent) shooting. Grove City, which played its third road game in a four-day span, outrebounded Geneva 33-32.
Heidi Mann led Geneva with 18 points.
Grove City will visit conference foe Westminster for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday in New Wilmington.
