Arkwright leads Wolverine rally at Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter as the Grove City College women's basketball team rallied from a 34-30 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat nearby rival Westminster 54-41 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action in Buzz Ridl Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
Arkwright finished with a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and a game-high five steals while junior guard Jackie Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) added 13 and senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Both teams got out to slow starts, as the Wolverines (4-8, 2-3 PAC) and Titans (0-11, 0-5) were tied 8-8 after one quarter. Westminster led by as much as five at 16-11 in the second quarter, but Grove City would close the half on a 9-3 run to take a 20-19 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Titans would once again push their lead back to five at 29-24 on a Rachel Durbin layup with 2:59 remaining. Freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) made back-to-back layups to keep Grove City close and the Wolverines were able to cut the deficit to two at 32-30 by the end of the third quarter.
Kristine Fromknecht made a layup to open the fourth quarter and push the Titan advantage to 34-30, but from there, Arkwright took over. The sophomore hit threes on three consecutive Wolverine possessions to put Grove City on top 39-36, and, after Westminster reclaimed the lead at 41-39 on a Danielle Dindak three, added a fourth three-pointer to give the Wolverines the lead for good at 42-41. Another Arkwright layup and free throw would push the advantage to 45-41, and Erbelding and Stewart combined to make seven of eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Buchanan added eight points, six rebounds and five blocks off the bench. Grove City shot just 34 percent from the floor (17 of 50) but outscored Westminster 16-3 at the foul line and held the Titans to 30 percent shooting (17 of 56).
Durbin led Westminster with eight points.
Grove City returns home for the first time in a month on Saturday, hosting Saint Vincent at 1 p.m.
