Grove City whips Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Freshman center Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) poured in a game-high 15 points and blocked five shots, and senior forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) recorded her eighth double-double of the season as the Grove City College women's basketball team rolled to a 59-40 victory over nearby rival Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening inside the Grove City College Arena.
Erbelding scored 10 points to go with game-highs of 10 rebounds and five assists. She also posted two steals for numbers 246 and 247 for her career, giving her a share of the College's all-time record set by Karin Hendrickson in 1999.
Leading 12-8 after a quarter, the Wolverines (9-11, 7-6 PAC) opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run and would outscore the Titans (2-18, 2-11) 18-4 into the final minute, when Kristine Fromknecht drained a three to close the first half and bring Westminster within 15 at 30-15.
Buchanan and freshman guard McKenzie Black (Akron, Ohio/Green) each scored eight first-half points to lead the Wolverines while Fromknecht had seven for the Titans.
Westminster would keep the game within 15 points for much of the third quarter, but Grove City closed the period on an 8-0 run to lead 46-23 through three. The Wolverines took their largest lead of the game at 53-29 on a jumper by sophomore guard Lexie Arkwright (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) before playing its reserves over the final five minutes.
For the game, Grove City outrebounded Westminster 39-25 and held the Titans to 32 percent (12 of 38) from the field. The Wolverines shot 23 of 54 (43 percent) from the field and 13 of 17 (77 percent) from the foul line.
Fromknecht led Westminster with 11 points while Rachel Durbin added 10.
Grove City will host conference foe Geneva on Saturday at 1 p.m. in College Arena as part of the College's Athletic Hall of Fame festivities.
