Grove City Advances to PAC Semis

GROVE CITY, PA, February 23, 2000 --The Lady Wolverines overcame a six-point second-half deficit to defeat visiting Waynesburg, 44-39, in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Wednesday. 

Fourth-seeded Grove City (14-11) will tip-off in the semifinals Friday against top-seeded Bethany in Bethany, WV at 8:00 p.m.  Second-seeded Washington & Jefferson will meet third-seeded Thiel in the other semi at 6:00 p.m. in Bethany.

Grove City clung to a  25-24 lead at intermission, before Waynesburg (1-22) opened the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 31-25 edge with 15:37 showing.  The Lady Wolverines scored their first point of the second half seven minutes in when Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead in half.  Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) and T.L. Thompson (Girard, PA/Girard) added threes to put Grove City up by three, 34-31.  Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) opened the lead up to seven with a field goal and a pair of free throws before Waynesburg ended a 10-minute scoring drought with 5:08 left in regulation.

Waynesburg cut the lead to three, 42-39, with 50 seconds remaining, but Murphy netted two free throws at 0:23 to secure the victory.

Murphy and Wright finished with a game-high 11 points each, while Dixon grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds.  Wright added seven boards and posted four blocked shots for the second night in a row. 

Kyana Bradley (Washington D.C./Roosevelt) put on a defensive clinic, recording 11 steals for Waynesburg.  The Yellow Jackets forced 23 turnovers and held GCC to 28% shooting.  Cara Penner (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring) tossed in a team-high 10 points for the Jackets.
