Grove City Advances to ECAC Title Game
DOVER, DE, March 4, 2000--The fifth-seeded Grove City College (16-12) women's basketball team upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley College (17-9), 52-44, in the semifinal round of the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament on Saturday at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware.
Grove City won the game with its defense, holding Lebanon Valley to 21.8% (12-55) shooting in the game -- 12.9% (4-31) in the second half.
The Lady Wolverines advance to Sunday's Championship Game to face Carnegie Mellon University at 2:00 p.m. in Dover. CMU beat tournament host Wesley, 67-53, to earn a spot in the finals. Grove City defeated CMU, 69-65, on November 23.
Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) and Jackie Becker (Broadview Hts, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) scored a team-high 11 points each for the Lady Wolverines, who overcame 31 turnovers by outrebounding Lebanon Valley, 47-30. Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Becker and Lindsay Yeats (McLean, VA/Langley) grabbed eight boards each.
Grove City led 21-20 at intermission and trailed just twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Lebanon Valley tied the game, 32-32, with eight minutes left, but the Lady Wolverines recovered with an 8-1 run and never trailed again.
The Lady Wolverines are seeking their second ECAC championship title in four years. They won the 1997 crown by beating Ursinus College in the finals at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
