Grove City wins conference title; Goyzueta MVP
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's golf team captured its seventh all-time Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Wednesday afternoon by finishing the 63-hole tournament with a team score of 1280 at Oak Tree Country Club. After shooting a 567 during the 27-hole Fall Championships, the Wolverines posted respective team scores of 359 and 354 Tuesday and Wednesday to sew up the championship.
Grove City finished with a 61-stroke margin over second-place Washington & Jefferson.
Junior Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) captured the conference's Most Valuable Player award by carding a victorious two-day total of 168. After shooting an 87 Tuesday, Goyzueta fired an 81 -- the lowest round of the tournament -- Wednesday to earn medalist honors. Goyzueta edged W&J's Catherine Schlegel by one stroke for the title.
Three Grove City golfers joined Goyzueta in receiving All-Conference recognition. Seniors Lindsay Crawford (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) and Jessica Johansen (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) tied for fifth place with 179s. Both earned First Team All-PAC.
Meanwhile, senior Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) earned Second Team All-PAC by finishing eighth overall. Gibson shot a 187. Freshman Kayla Finney (Valencia, Pa./Mars) tied for 14th with a 206.
Head coach Melissa Lamie earned PAC Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Wolverines to their first league title since 2003. Grove City also won conference titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Westminster (1378) and Saint Vincent (1540) rounded out the team standings.
