Durling Player of the Year; Wolverines third at PACs

BELLE VERNON, Pa. --Senior Esther Durling (Perry, Mich./Perry) wrapped up an outstanding career with her fourth-consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Year honor to lead the Grove City College women's golf team to a third-place team finish in the spring portion of the 2014-15 PAC Women's Golf Championships, held at Cedarbrook Golf Course on Friday and Saturday.

The Wolverines shot rounds of 398 and 411 this weekend for a 72-hole, cumulative total of 1618 between the Fall and Spring Championships. Washington and Jefferson won the team title with a score of 1439 while Westminster finished second with a 1585.

For the first time during the 2014-15 season, the PAC Player of the Year and the All-PAC teams were determined by the combined 72-hole scores from the Fall and Spring Championships instead of the 36-hole scores from the Spring Championships exclusively.

Durling, for the first time in seven PAC Championship events, failed to win medalist honors, shooting rounds of 85 and 81 to finish second to W&J's Jocelyn Sudar, who only played in the Spring Championships. Those scores would be enough, however, for Durling to hold off the field and become just the third player in conference history to earn PAC Player of the Year honors all four seasons with a 72-hole total of 341. Durling beat both Marissa Sudar and Jennifer Suder of W&J by 13 strokes to earn the accolade.

Junior Katie Birmingham (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), who joined the Wolverines for the spring season, shot rounds of 98 and 106 to finish second on the team and tied for 14th on the weekend with a 204. Junior Rebecca Shakely (Butler, Pa./Butler) was third on the team with a 36-hole total of 216 (106-110) while senior Meghan Love (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) wrapped up her collegiate career with rounds of 109 and 115 for a 224 total. Sophomore Leah Wilson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) shot identical rounds of 114 for a two-day total of 228.

Today's competition concludes the 2014-15 season for Grove City. The Wolverines will lose Durling and Love to graduation.
