Lady Wolverines drop opener in OT

GROVE CITY, PA, August 31, 2001--Hope College senior Liz Dornbos buried a direct kick in the fourth minute of overtime as the visiting Flying Dutch from Holland, Michigan defeated Grove City College, 1-0, in the season opener for both schools.

Dornbos was awarded the direct kick after Grove City was whistled on a "shirt pull".  Dornbos set the ball just outside the box and launched it over a wall of Lady Wolverine defenders, finding the top left corner of the net with 11:32 left in the first overtime.

Grove City outshot Hope, 12-11, but couldn't convert several good scoring opportunities in the final eight minutes of regulation.  Lady Wolverine senior sweeper Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer) sacrificed her body twice in the final two minutes to squelch a couple of Hope scoring chances.  Freshman Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) posted a team-high three shots on goal for GCC.

Lady Wolverine junior goalkeeper Katy Turman (Meadowbrook, PA/Abington) was credited with five saves in 93 minutes of action.  Senior net-minder Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock), who opened the second half in goal, was forced to leave in her first minute with a jammed finger.

Hope goalie Mary Ayres earned the shutout with five saves.
