Grove City gets its kicks at Fredonia, wins tourney title

FREDONIA, NY, September 8, 2001--Two overtimes didn't break a 1-1 tie between Grove City College and SUNY-Fredonia in the championship game of the 10th Annual Blue Devil Days Inn Tournament in Fredonia, NY, but penalty kicks did as the Lady Wolverines netted four to the Blue Devils' one to claim the title.

Grove City rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit on a goal by sophomore Diane Metzger (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) in the 64th minute off a pass from sophomore Meg Tilley (Columbia, MD/Hammond).

Tilley also accounted for one of the four penalty-kick goals.  The other three came off the feet of senior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central), sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls) and senior Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer).

Senior Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock) started in goal for the Lady Wolverines and made six saves.  Junior Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) took over at the start of the second half and played through the extra sessions, stopping all six shots she faced.  Only one of Fredonia's five penalty kicks found the back of the net as Turman turned back two of them.

Tilley, who netted a hat trick in Friday's 6-1 victory over Juniata College, was named tournament MVP.  Also named to the All-Tournament team were Keehlwetter, sophomore Danielle Balliet (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel), who had two assists Friday, and sophomore Susannah Cafardi (Waterford, PA/Villa Maria).

Officially, the game will be recorded as a tie for each school since the NCAA does not break ties with penalty kicks.  Grove City's record moved to 1-2-1 overall.
