Grove City cruises in PAC opener,
halts skid
WASHINGTON, PA, September 18, 2001--The Lady Wolverine soccer team stopped a three-game
winless streak Tuesday, winning its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener over host
Washington & Jefferson College, 5-1.
The defending PAC champs, who improved to 2-4-1 overall, scored a pair of goals in the first eight minutes and led 3-1 at halftime. Grove City controlled the tempo from start to finish, out-shooting the Presidents in the game, 29-3.
Sophomore Diane Metzger (North Huntindon, PA/Norwin) opened the scoring in the sixth minute with her second goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls). Less than two minutes later, senior Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer) netted her first of two goals in the game, assisted by sophomore Meg Tilley (Columbia, MD/Hammond). After W&J cut the lead in half, Tilley put the Lady Wolverines ahead 3-1 in the 15th minute with an unassisted goal -- her team-high fifth of the season. Keehlwetter extended the lead to three with her second goal in the 57th minute off a feed from freshman Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington). Freshman Autumn Hubbard (Nampa, ID/Nampa Christian) capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.
Junior Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) and senior Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock) split time in net and faced just two shots on goal.
