GCC downs Westminster, nets fifth straight win

GROVE CITY, PA, October 9, 2001--It's never been fun remembering the Titans ... until now.

The Grove City College women's soccer team created a lasting memory Tuesday afternoon, defeating arch-rival Westminster College in double overtime, 2-1.  The victory marked the fifth in a row for the Lady Wolverines, who improved to 7-5-2 overall and ran their unbeaten string to six games (5-0-1).  Meanwhile, the Lady Titans had their six-game winning streak halted and fell to 10-3-0.

It was Westminster who dealt Grove City its last loss on Sep. 20, 4-1, in New Wilmington.  The Lady Wolverines had dropped the previous four meetings against Westminster by a combined score of 15-2.

Freshman Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) netted the game-winner six minutes into the second overtime session after dribbling through the box and finding the right corner of the net with her team-high ninth goal of the season.  Sophomore Danielle Balliet (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) spotted Novosel streaking ahead and supplied the assist with a perfect pass.

Sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick with nine seconds left before halftime.  It was Cuffe's second goal of the year.

Westminster tied the game on Ashley Pyle's goal in the 54th minute, ending the Lady Wolverines' consecutive shutout streak at five games.  But the Lady Titans, who were averaging 3.5 goals per game, wouldn't dent the scoring column again.

Junior Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) played the entire game in goal for the Lady Wolverines and made nine saves, including three key stops in overtime.  Turman's effort was complimented by the defensive play of back-liners Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer), a senior, and sophomores Susannah Cafardi (Waterford, PA/Villa Maria) and Jessica Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City).

Westminster out-shot Grove City, 20-10.

The Lady Wolverines had been winless in five overtime games this fall, going 0-3-2.
