GCC coasts to seventh straight win, nets PAC top seed

BETHANY, WV, October 16, 2001--On a blustery, cold afternoon in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, it was all downhill for the Lady Wolverine soccer team.

Sophomore Meg Tilley (Columbia, MD/Hammond) had a goal and two assists as Grove City outshot Bethany, 47-4, and extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-1 victory over the host Bison.  With the win, the Lady Wolverines secured the top seed and right to host the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, Oct. 26-27.

Tilley gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with her 10th goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls).   Bethany tied the game two minutes later, but senior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central) gave the Lady Wolverines a lead they would never relinquish with her second goal of the year in the 35th minute, assisted by Tilley.

The score remained 2-1 until Grove City buried a pair of insurance goals in the final four minutes of the game.  Freshman Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) scored her 10th of the year in the 87th minute off another feed from Tilley.  A minute later, Cuffe set up freshman Autumn Hubbard (Nampa, ID/Nampa Christian) with her second goal of the fall.

Senior Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock) and junior Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) split time in goal, making one save apiece.

Grove City improved to 9-5-2 overall, 7-0-0 in the PAC.   Bethany fell to 4-12-0 overall, 1-7-0 in the league.

Earlier in the day, senior fullback Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer) was named PAC player of the week for her solid defensive play in wins over Westminster and Waynesburg last week.
