Lady Wolverines headed to PAC title game

GROVE CITY, PA, October 26, 2001--On a day when Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) would have settled for just a hat, the freshman forward netted her first career hat trick as the top-seeded Grove City College women's soccer team advanced to the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference championship game with a 5-1 victory over fifth-seeded Bethany College amid winter-like conditions at the College Field.

The Lady Wolverines (11-7-2) will seek back-to-back PAC titles tomorrow when they meet third-seeded Waynesburg College in the title game at 2:00 p.m.

Grove City and Bethany were tied, 1-1, at halftime before Novosel exploded for three consecutive goals in the 49th, 61st and 70th minutes, giving her a team-high 13 goals on the season.  She scored the first off an assist from sophomore Susannah Cafardi (Waterford, PA/Villa Maria), then headed in the next two off corner kicks by sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls).

Junior Karen Reefer (Butler, PA/Slippery Rock) added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, her third of the year.

Sophomore Diane Metzger (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) opened the scoring in the 35th minute with her fifth goal of the fall, assisted by sophomore Meg Tilley (Columbia, MD/Hammond).  Bethany matched that with a goal by Lisa Claus in the 40th minute.

The Lady Wolverines outshot the Bison, 38-8.

Senior goalie Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock) and junior keeper Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) combined on the victory in goal.

Snow flurries fell from start to finish and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour made it feel like 14 degrees.
